Overview
This activity will provide education by an internationally recognized faculty to improve understanding of the dynamics of sports concussion.
Goal Statements
Main Program
The goal of the symposium is to provide state-of-the-art research and clinical information related to the science and practice of sports concussion and concussion management from a multidisciplinary and internationally-recognized faculty. Specific topics that will be addressed include: how concussion legislation has contributed to improving safety in youth sports, the importance of prioritizing pediatrics in concussion research, a review of causes and treatment for youth with prolonged symptoms, an analysis of the effectiveness of head protection equipment in sports for reducing the risk of concussion, how behavioral interventions can reduce head impact exposure in football, current ethical topics related to the clinical practice of concussion care, the role that culture plays in concussion evaluation and management, the psychometric basis and techniques for using serial assessment to make clinical decisions, methods for predicting recovery from concussion and associated methods for rehabilitation, an examination of the current status of biomarkers in concussion assessment, a review of the past, present and future of concussion practice, how fear avoidance of pain can affect recovery and should be considered in treatment planning, the role of sports psychology in concussion care, and how a practitioner may use telehealth in clinical practice with concussion. These educational topic areas build upon established experience knowledge and skills for both the practitioner and researcher working in the area of sports concussion.
Pre-Conference
The goal of the symposium is to provide an intermediate level of educational material that builds on foundational knowledge about concussion by reviewing specific factors that may influence clinical management. Topics include the role that gender may play in concussion management, recognizing and treating persisting symptoms following concussion, practical treatment considerations when working with pediatric populations, and special issues that may be relevant for treating collegiate athletes. These educational topics will build on an already basic understanding of concussion by providing greater depth for any practitioner working in the area of sports concussion.
Target Audience
Main Program
This educational curriculum is intended to target an intermediate to advanced audience of clinicians and researchers including physicians, psychologists, neuropsychologists, athletic trainers, nurses, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
Pre-Conference
This educational curriculum is intended to target an intermediate level audience of clinicians including physicians, psychologists, neuropsychologists, athletic trainers, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
Learning Objectives:
Main Program
After completion of the activity, participants should be able to:
1. Provide 2 examples of how concussion laws in youth sports have contributed to increased safety in sports participation.
2. Assess the shortcomings of adult-focused concussion research as it applies to pediatrics.
3. Discuss explanations for, and treatment approaches to, individuals with prolonged recovery.
4. Critique the effectiveness of head injury protection equipment as it relates to reducing the risk of concussion.
5. Describe behavioral techniques with application to reduce head impact exposure in athletes.
6. Describe 3 current ethical issues related to the treatment of concussion.
7. Explain specific cultural factors that would influence the assessment and treatment of concussion.
8. Describe the use of 2 methods of reliable chance to interpret results from serial assessment in concussion.
9. Discuss factors that relate to concussion recovery and how they can be used to create individualized treatment plans.
10. Explain current controversies related to using biomarkers to diagnosis mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
11. Describe the evolution of concussion research and clinical practice.
12. Identify which behavioral techniques which can be used to address fear avoidance of pain in recovery from concussion.
13. Explain the role of sports psychology as it pertains to treating concussed athletes.
14. Provide examples of specific steps needed to set up a telehealth treatment model in sports neuropsychology.
Level of the Activity: Intermediate to Advanced
Pre-Conference
After completion of the activity, participants should be able to:
1. Describe if and how gender may be a factor in the management and treatment of sports-related concussion.
2. Identify specific techniques useful when treating persisting concussion symptoms.
3. Describe unique aspects of providing assessment and treatment to youth with concussion.
4. Explain the management approaches that may have unique applicability for collegiate athletes with concussion.
Level of the Activity: Intermediate
